The Journey So Far! - Our History

Our church was originally established in 1990 through the joint effort of the Blackburn Baptist Church (now the Crossway Baptist Church) and the Baptist Union of Victoria. Chris and Faye Pope were our first pastoral leaders.

Our Sunday worship services were initially held at the Narre Warren North Community Hall but later were held in the community room of the new Pre-school Centre in Parkhill Drive on the Timbarra Estate. After a couple of years the name of our church was changed to Berwick Community Baptist Church. After four years Chris concluded his ministry and in mid 1997 Charles & Marjorie Olsen commenced their pastoral ministry with us.

When the new Timbarra Community hall was completed in 1999 we held our worship services and other meetings there until January 2005. At the time this was a very wonderful provision of God for us.

Our congregation has grown steadily since 1997 and in the early 2000's we began planning for our own building in Narre Warren North. First, with the help of the Baptist Union, we purchased land in Fox Road then began planning stage one of our new building, which was constructed in 2004.

Our new building was officially opened on Sunday 20 February 2005 with the Rev Alan Marr (Director of Ministries of the BUV) as our guest speaker. A few weeks later the Nazaret Spanish Speaking Baptist Church began sharing the property with us as our ministry partner.

Small Groups - Small Groups

Small groups are not just a program of our church, they are at the very centre of our life together as God's people.

God didn't intend any Christian to live in isolation. The Bible doesn't speak about Christians as 'Lone Rangers' and more than 50 times in the New Testament God speaks of a "one another" type of faith. One of the great benefits of group life is that it provides you with a practical opportunity to experience New Testament community. In a small group you find a place to belong and people with whom to share your life.

The apostle Paul wrote "I want us to help each other with the faith we have. Your faith will help me, and my faith will help you." (Romans 1: 12)

The best way to make new friendship is to join a small group. Within group life you will make friends, study the Bible, pray and begin using your gifts in ministry.

Church members lead our small groups. Most groups meet weekly or fortnightly - in the morning, in the afternoon or in the evening, and in a group-member's home. We have more than a dozen home groups meeting on different days of the week in different areas of the City of Casey.

VIAJANDO JUNTOS (TRAVELLING TOGETHER) - Our History

All journeys begin with the first step. Our journey began in early 2005 when we began a ministry partnership with the Nazaret Spanish Speaking Baptist Church led by our two pastors Charles Olsen and Antonio Rodriguez.

Our partnership is no mere sharing of a building it is a common journey of sharing the gospel and building up the body of Christ. Our two churches feel the same joy towards each other as the apostle Paul when he wrote to the Philippians "you have been my partners in spreading the good news about Christ" (Phil. 1: 5).

The journey has included great times of shared worship, celebration and luscious food!

A great strength has been the amalgamation of our young adults work and youth work including two shared camps.

Our journey together enabled us to jointly call Wally Starchenko to work full-time with our youth and young adults and he began this ministry as Associate Pastor in February 2006.

All of our five pastors - Charles, Antonio, Don, Wally and Lin meet together weekly for prayer, sharing and planning. All have a passion to see people come to Christ and people grow and develop in Christ.

We are able to accomplish much more in ministry because we are working together. "Two people can accomplish more than twice as much as one, they get a better return for their labour." Eccl. 4: 9

A significant step was taken in September 2006 when both churches agreed to function as one church for the next two years. Legally we remain two churches but will have one pastoral team, one Leadership Team and one shared vision for the future. We will continue to have English and Spanish language services and a young adults service on Sundays.

The final step of this first journey will be taken in September 2008 when our churches will decide whether we will permanently amalgamate our two churches and begin the next stage of our journey together.

We look forward to that great day!

Our Vision - What We Believe

Vision is about our hopes of what could be!

We envision sharing the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection with unchurched friends and people in our city, many of whom will accept him as Saviour.

We envision developing our people - new believers as well as established believers - into fully functioning followers of Jesus Christ through people-friendly worship services, kids church services, special events and most important small groups.

We envision becoming a church of small groups - youth as well as adults - where our people model biblical community: a safe place where we accept one another and are accepted, love and are loved, shepherd and are shepherded, encourage and are encouraged, forgive and are forgiven, and serve and are served.

We envision helping all our people - youth as well as adults - to discover their God-given purpose so they are equipped to serve Jesus Christ effectively in some ministry either within or outside our church. Our goal is that every member will be a minister.

We envision welcoming numerous members into our church who are excited about Jesus Christ, experiencing healing in their family relationships and marriages, and grow together in love.

We envision our recruiting, training and sending out a number of our members as missionaries, church planters and church workers all over the world. We see a number of our people pursuing short-term missions service in various countries.

We envision planting a church in Australia or overseas every five years.

We envision a larger facility that will accommodate our growth and be accessible to all in our city. This facility will provide ample room for worship services, kids church, small groups, Bible study, prayer and other meetings. While we do not believe that 'bigger is better', numerical growth is a by-product of church health and effective evangelism. We desire to grow as God prospers us and uses us to reach a lost and dying world.

This is our dream - our vision of what could be!

Our church is a partnership of the Berwick Community Baptist Church and the Nazaret Spanish Speaking Baptist Church.

We moved into our new property in Narre Warren North in early 2005, and our ministry partnership commenced then. The purpose of our partnership, under God, is to more effectively 'make more disciples of Jesus Christ.' Both congregations were established about 16 years ago - the Berwick Church used a rented public hall in Berwick and the Nazaret Church met in another church's property in Dandenong.

Music & Creative Ministries - Music/ Worship Team

Music plays a key part in each of our weekend worship services. God's special blessing on gifted musicians and singers can have a powerful impact for good in people's lives.

We have three worship bands, each comprised of church members who voluntarily give their time and God-given talents to this strategic ministry. The team also includes technical support people who are responsible for sound and data projection tasks at each service.

We seek to build our music teams through prayer and investing in people. Two key values which we seek to develop in our music teams are 'team work' and 'servanthood'.

We seek to give our very best to God.

Families are important - Mainly Music

A key focus of Mainly Music is nurturing parents. More than ever parents need to honoured, supported, encouraged and celebrated. Parenting toddlers can be stressful and demanding. At the point where parents most need help and support, many are very isolated.

Mainly Music seeks to provide a sense of visability, providing an environment where 'mothers are important' and in the wider sense 'families are important'.

Fun is a vital ingredient of the weekly program. Mothers dancing along with their baby or young child, having fun, looking silly, and not caring the least. Being with children can be very freeing - we need to make the most of it.

We see mainly music as a link to ongoing memories of their children's childhood and a link to the love that God has for each one of us.

Part of a world-wide family! - About Us

Both churches are members of the Baptist family of churches in Victoria and Australia, and the history of our Christian movement in Australia goes back 150 years. There are 900 Baptist congregations throughout Australia. Our church is also part of a world-wide community of Baptist Christians numbering 47 million living in more than 200 countries throughout the world.

We have a heart for those who have no church home. Many people today are disillusioned by organised religion. Some have seen hypocrisy. Others have had no spiritual background or experience and therefore see Christianity as irrelevant. What we seek to offer to people in our community are healthy responsible relationships with mature followers of Jesus. God cares deeply for people and we care deeply too.

Our Mission - What We Believe

Our church exists to glorify God by making more disciples of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28: 19-20).

A disciple commits to obey Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord - through worshipping God, fellowshipping with God's people, growing in a knowledge of God, serving God and sharing the Good News about Jesus Christ with others.

Based on this purpose we covenant together by God's grace, to live our lives consistent with the teachings of the Bible

supporting the ministry of our church through regular worship attendance, prayer, service and ministry, giving and personal witness,

living lives in word and deed that encourage others to know and be like Jesus Christ, and

by reflecting in all our relationships the servant love of Jesus Christ.

Children's Ministry - Children's Ministry

Our Children's ministries are dedicated to laying a spiritual foundation that, in God's timing, will lead a child into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

A vibrant and effective children's ministry is essential to the ongoing health and effectiveness of our church. Worshippers who attend our chruch must feel confident that their children will be safe and secure and that children will enjoy and learn through their experiences in our children's ministries.

To effectively minister to children we need many volunteers. Some volunteers serve in our children's ministry weekly, some for three weeks at a time and some are helpers who serve when they can.

Volunteer leaders and helpers need to have a love for God and commitment to our church and a passion for serving with children. Volunteers are placed in roles according to their gifts, abilities and time commitment.

Prayer Ministry - Prayer

Our prayer ministry seeks to intercede on behalf of anyone who makes a prayer request known to us. This includes members in crisis, people who are ill, many emergency situations, and for needs given to us by church leaders, ministry leaders and others within our church family.

Our church and its ministries are prayed for regularly in general, and for specific needs as the Spirit leads.

We encourage those who are specially gifted, to pray in their areas of passion and to create a spirit of prayer throughout our church by supporting, initiating, teaching and participating in prayer teams.

We encourage each other to pray:

intentionally in our times of Scripture reading and personal reflection,

with each other spontaneously while chatting, during a phone call, in a personal note of encouragement, and

in our small groups, supporting each other as we share our personal concerns and needs.

We pray for special needs

during our congregational worship times and when we organise other times of prayer for the whole church,

when prayer is offered for individuals by our prayer ministry team following our worship services,

when prayer requests are handed in at our worship services, and

by our prayer chain in response to urgent prayer requests.

Prayer for healing - Prayer

The ministry of healing in our church takes place in a number of ways:

laying on of hands in a worship service or towards the close of communion.

anointing with oil and prayer in the home of a person who is sick, with members of their family and members of our prayer team. Normally this prayer for healing is requested by the person who is sick or by their family in response to James 5: 14 "Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord ... their prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make them well."

request for the ministry of prayer by a patient in a hospital. This prayer will be offered after consultation with hospital staff. Prayer will be offered for the person concerned, hospital staff and other patients.
